Meet Shannon Wallace

Q & A with Shannon K Wallace, M.S. Health and Wellness Coaching

What is a health and wellness coach?

A health and wellness coach works with a patient to uncover motivations to make a lifestyle change and develop strategies to make those changes last. While the patient is practicing the strategies that work best, the coach is there for support and guidance along the way.

What is lifestyle medicine?

Lifestyle medicine is the optimization of nutrition, physical activity, sleep and stress management to reduce the risk for or manage chronic disease.

Why did you decide to become a health and wellness coach?

I woke up one day and realized my lifestyle was killing me. I struggled for six years to make drastic lifestyle changes on my own. As my passion for my personal health and wellness continued to grow and I enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Lifestyle Medicine. As a result I realized this was my new calling and continued with the Master of Science in Health and Wellness Coaching.

What are your specialty areas?

I specialize in lifestyle medicine changes related to chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I have a special interest in helping patients learn how stress and sleep impact their health.

What is your coaching philosophy?

I have an evidence-based process that encourages patients to take ownership in reaching his/her wellness goals. This type of coaching style works well with patients that need a guide to help uncover motivations, help evaluate options or help the patient create experiences to safely try new things. My style involves actively listening so patients feel safe in exploring options and reflecting on experiences without fear of judgment.

How do you spend your free time?

I read every day. It is a habit I am very grateful my parents help me grow. My love for exploring new places also started very early. My favorite thing to do is just walk and take in all the sights, sounds and smells of a new place. Sports are a big part of our family life too. It is extra fun to travel and watch our favorite team – Creighton Bluejays and the alumni that have gone pro!
