Laser Treatment for Toe Nail Fungus
In the mildest forms, onychomycosis or nail fungus can be just a cosmetic problem but over time it can cause nails to grow abnormally and even cause pain when trying to wear shoes or walk. Fungus is caused by a variety of communicable organisms similar to bacterial infections. However nail fungus is much more difficult to treat than most bacterial infections of the skin.
The latest alternative for treatment is the use of laser. Laser treatment of nail fungus does not have the systemic effects like oral medication (liver damage) and has been shown to be more effective than topical medication. Initial research and case study reports have shown that nail fungus treated with laser is showing success rates of around 80-85%. The final determination of success for an individual can still take up to a year as the nail grows out completely.
I’m finding similar success to early published studies. The laser we use has a dual approach. The first step is the use of one type of laser to break up the cell wall of the fungal cell. Once this is accomplished the next step uses a second type of laser to heat the now susceptible fungal cell to kill the individual cell.
Laser treatment generally follows a schedule of appointments every 2-4 weeks and averages 4-6 appointments per individual. Each appointment typically lasts between 45 minutes to one hour.
And remember nail fungus can be spread from one person to another. Don’t let what can be a simple problem get worse and affect your loved ones just because you don’t know what to do.
