Tips for Ankle Sprains

There are approximately 25,000 ankle sprains that occur every day.  And 70% of those people have suffered previously with a sprained ankle.

The best treatment for ankle sprains is to control pain and swelling.  Here are 4 tips for ankle sprains:

  • Resting the injured ankle (use crutches or limit walking)
  • Ice for 10 minutes with 10-15 minutes in between treatments
  • Compress the injured ankle by wrapping in an elastic bandage or elastic brace
  • Elevate the ankle at least 30 degrees above the heart whenever possible.

If your pain and swelling continues, it is always best to make an appointment to ensure that there isn’t more damage such as a broken bone.  It is also recommended that if you continue to sprain the same ankle over and over again to make an appointment to be evaluated.
