Custom Foot Orthotics
What Are They?
Custom foot orthotics are prescription medical devices made specifically to support your feet. They match your feet precisely and are designed to improve your foot movement. This leads to more comfort and mobility. Podiatrists use orthotics to treat foot problems such as:
- plantar fasciitis
- bursitis
- tendinitis
- bunions
- hammertoes
- diabetic foot ulcers
- foot, ankle, and heel pain
How Custom Foot Orthotics Differ From Shoe Inserts
For both inserts and custom orthotics, the doctor starts with a complete evaluation of your feet and ankle. The information gathered during the exam helps determine if shoe inserts might be helpful or if you need prescription orthotics.
Shoe inserts come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Inserts are not custom made to your feet. Therefore, they are most commonly used for a temporary solution.
In contrast, custom orthotics are recommended for patients living with conditions that cause chronic pain. The doctor begins writing the prescription with custom mapping of the foot with a 3D computerized scanner followed by any measurements of the feet or legs. The information is then sent to create a set of unique foot orthotics.
Custom foot orthotics are divided into two categories:
Functional orthotics are made of a semi-flexible to rigid material. They commonly used to treat foot pain caused by abnormal motion. Functional orthotics can also be used to treat injuries such as shin splints or tendinitis.
Accommodative orthotics are softer and meant to provide additional cushioning and support. They are commonly used to treat diabetic foot ulcers, painful calluses on the bottom of the foot or other uncomfortable conditions.
Orthotic Q&A
Q: Are custom orthotics expensive?
A: While orthotics do typically cost more than inserts, custom orthotics are designed to last for 3-5 years. In comparison, shoe inserts should not be used for more than a year. With yearly orthotic checks, you can be sure your investment lasts. Custom foot orthotics may also be covered by health insurance.
